• Welcome to Woodsmoor

    Stockport's Hidden Gem

Woodsmoor is a wonderful suburb of Stockport in Greater Manchester. This leafy area is served by Woodsmoor Station opened by British Rail in 1990. It is still one of the newest stations on the network.

Woodsmoor has a rich history spanning hundreds of years. From the late 19th-century, house building on former farmland created the small but perfectly-formed district we live and work in today.

The area still has many large and old trees, existing since it was the estate that later became Stockport Grammar School. A disused golf course on the former Mirrlees Blackstone Engineering site links Woodsmoor with neighbouring Stepping Hill Hospital and Hazel Grove village.

Woodsmoor Station Friends formed in 2016 to work with the community and Network Rail. We aim to improve the station environment and facilities to create a vibrant social focus for the many commuters and travellers who catch trains every day from Woodsmoor Station.

    Station Improvement

Woodsmoor Station Friends formed in 2016 supported by the Network Rail Community scheme. Our members dedicate themselves to maintaining and enhancing our community station by undertaking station improvement projects. These include the installation of planters that give a year-round display of flowers and perennials.

In Summer 2017, Great Moor Primary School created some colourful Woodsmoor themed murals for the station fences and a team from Carillion worked hard to tidy the station and improve the station environment.

In 2019 the station was further enhanced by the installation of some unique artwork by local artist Eamonn Murphy depicting Mirrlees Fields and Stepping Hill Hospital that Woodsmoor Station serves. You can now buy reproductions of these pieces for display in your home. Use the contact section below to enquire further.

In June 2020, more original artwork was installed to coincide with the station's 30th anniversary. These include an amusing take on the Woodsmoor level crossing from local artist Eric Jackson and an exhibit outlining the remarkable role our district had in the history of Jaguar cars.

It's all going on for Woodsmoor Station so do get in touch if you'd like to get involved.

    Community Projects

As well as working on the station, WSF acts as a valuable community resource. To brighten the station approach on Ferndale Avenue we have planted hundreds of Spring bulbs.

Local volunteers arrange events that support worthy charities. Don't be surprised if you arrive one morning to be offered coffee and cake in support of Barnabus for whom WSF have raised over £1000

Or simply peruse the station notice boards to find out about the history of our fascinating district. You can also read about other community initiatives run by residents, the Allotments Committee, Woodsmoor Artists or the details of the Classic Car Show.
